Gary is our hero, a former stockbroker who, after being dumped and kicked from his house by his wife, winds up staying in a hotel until he figures out what to do with himself. He also quits his job as a stockbroker, and one morning wakes up to a newspaper and a cat on his doorstep.

He soon finds that the newspaper is from tomorrow, bearing headlines of what is going to happen today. Gary then takes the responsibility to counter fate, and change the headlines by saving peoples' lives. He does not abuse the paper for lottery purposes, but only to pay his hotel expences to live, and once in a while, for something extremely important. For example, he gets his blind friend, Marissa, a seeing-eye-dog. Gary is a kind yet quirky, overly lovable hero.

He eventually becomes the owner of a bar, McGinty's, and tries to unravel the secrets of the paper when he learns more about Lucius Snow, who is seen in pictures that are many many years old with the same cat that brings Gary the paper, while at the same time keep up with the many trials that the paper gives him.
